 My guess is that these two cats go on their rounds about that time of night and just so happen that it is around that time that they meet up. It’s not done on purpose, they just happen to be on the same time table to pass through at that time. It sounds like they might be telling the other that it is “my” territory and “you” need to leave. It is most likely two cats of the same gender which can cause issues as well. Of course, two cats of the same sex can be friends, but they also can be enemies especially if one (or both) are female cats in heat or if, they are males, there is a female in heat not too far off. Sometimes, though, cats just don’t like each other. I’m sure that you’ve met at least one person in your life who you didn’t care for (or maybe even hated) just because of who they are. Your personalities didn’t click for whatever reason. Well, the same thing can happen to cats. And, while they are very intelligent creatures, they won’t generally go through the reasons as to why they need to get along with a cat that they don’t like. (I have seen that happen, but it is rare especially with cats who don’t live together.)
