 Some years ago, my neighbors had a rescue dog. After helping a litter of pups, she became very territorial. Trouble was, she viewed the entire block as her territory. She “accidentally “ got out often. My late son ,who was wheelchair bound, likes to take some sun and fresh air in front of our building. The dog bothered him more than once. But when she bit him, I called animal control. They informed the neighbors that if this happened again, the dog would be euthanized. I also let them know that there would be a civil suit. (The husband was a lawyer. Visions of a handicapped child telling a jury how he was attacked by a dog. )Guess what? There was never again an accidental escape. Doggy was only ever seen in the fenced in backyard. It matters not one bit that you viewed your dog getting out as accidental. You are both liable. Personally, I would offer help with the vet bill and make sure there are no more escapes.
