The pleasure dogs take in activities of that kind probably goes back to the instinct to dissect prey. “Dissect” is the term that is applied to all activities a predator uses to prepare a prey animal for consumption after killing the prey; eg, plucking feathers off a bird. It also applies to actually disemboweling a prey animal. The behaviors shown by dogs when tearing up stuff are similar to the behaviors of feral or wild canids in dealing with actual prey.
