 A whole lot of dogs like to shred tissue, tear up paper, rip egg cartons to bits, and/or pull the stuffing out of dog toys. The pleasure dogs take in activities of that kind probably goes back to the instinct to dissect prey. “Dissect” is the term that is applied to all activities a predator uses to prepare a prey animal for consumption after killing the prey; eg, plucking feathers off a bird. It also applies to actually disemboweling a prey animal. The behaviors shown by dogs when tearing up stuff are similar to the behaviors of feral or wild canids in dealing with actual prey.
